NEW BEER RELEASE CELEBRATES MEALS ON WHEELS

Ultimate Tailgate Auction Winner Brews a New Beer with Wilmington Brew Works

January 25, 2023

Wilmington, Delaware – Last October, Ben Muse, co-owner and operating partner of Two Stones Pub, stopped into Wilmington Brew Works to float an idea that could benefit Meals on Wheels of Delaware. “As a board member [of Meals on Wheels], I’m always looking for ways to increase fundraising opportunities.”  He presented an idea to Craig Wensell, CEO and Head Brewer at Wilmington Brew Works, for an auction item at Meals on Wheels Delaware’s upcoming Ultimate Tailgagte – ‘Brewmaster-for-a-day.’ Wensell was all in.

Meals on Wheels Delaware raises funds to support the five program partners that prepare and deliver healthy meals to over 6,200 seniors throughout the state. On October 20, the Ultimate Tailgate was held at the Grove at Delaware Park. It featured creative tailgate bites prepared by local restaurants, live music by the Stone Shakers, a craft beer trail curated by 2SP, and the main event, a live auction with 100% of the proceeds going to Meals on Wheels Delaware.

The bidding for the brewmaster experience was fast and furious. In the end, long-time Meals on Wheels supporter Mike Cassidy, co-owner of Cassidy Painting, won the prize. Wensell contacted Cassidy to set up a brew day and discuss options for making a beer. Cassidy had an idea to brew a lager, possibly with a red tint, and name it after his rescue dog, Red. Wensell loved the idea and suggested making a Altbier, a copper-colored beer originally from the Dusseldorf area of Germany.

Cassidy came to Wilmington Brew Works for a day of Brewing, where the production team put him to work, with tasks such as emptying the grain from the mash tun. His work isn’t done – he’ll come in to help with canning when the beer is ready. But his labors will be rewarded.

Wilmington Brew Works and Meals on Wheels will hold a beer release and Toast to Michael Cassidy at 7pm on Wednesday, February 1st, the beer’s release date. Ol’Red will be available at the Wilmington Brew Works taproom on draught and in cans, and available at 2SP Restaurant locations in Delaware soon after.
